The DNA of a Christian
(Romans 8:1-17)

“Spirit” = 1x in chapters 1-7
“Spirit” = 19x in chapter 8
The DNA of a Christian: (“In Christ”)
1. I have a new PROMISE!
Romans 8:1-2 1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.
2. I have a new CONFIDENCE!
Romans 8:16 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.
Matthew 5:20 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Romans 3:22 22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.
1 John 5:13 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.
Romans 8:9 9 And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.
3 terms referring to the Holy Spirit:
Spirit of God; Spirit of Christ; Spirit of Adoption
(Different aspects of the Spirit’s MINISTRY.)
3. I have a new WILLINGNESS!
Romans 8:14 14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.
- “led” – Gk. “ágō” – to Lead (in the passive, indicative!)
- Passive = Something is being done to you, you allow it to be done.
- Indicative = It indicates that you’re willing to be led.
(Literally… “to Willingly Allow the Spirit to Lead you!”)
4. I have a new DESIRE!
Romans 8:5 (ESV) 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
- phronéō – “a mindset” - The activity represented by this word involves the will, affections, and conscience.
Romans 8:6–7 (ESV) 6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.
- phrónēma – “a mindset” - The tendency or inclination of the mind, its bent. It includes the act of the understanding and of the will.
Isaiah 55:8–9 8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. 9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
5. I have a new AUDIENCE!
Romans 8:8–9 (ESV) 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you.
- Who am I trying to PLEASE here?
6. I have a new OBLIGATION!
Romans 8:12–13 12 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.
Paul’s letters always follow the same formula:
1.) Indicative tells us who we are “in Christ”. (Ch. 1-5)
2.) Imperative tells us how we should live because of who we are. (6-10)
Philippians 3:16 Let us live up to what we have already attained.
Ephesians 4:1 1 I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. (
Colossians 3:1-3 1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
