Overcoming the Urge to Give Up!

(Romans 4:13-25)

“At least as important as the things we wait for is the work God wants to do in us while we wait.”

Romans 4:13 13 Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world...

Genesis 12:1-3 1 The Lord had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you. 2 "I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."

OVERCOMING THE URGE TO GIVE UP:

            1. Focus on _____________, not Rituals

Romans 4:13 13 It was not through the law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.

Romans 3:20 no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.

Galatians 3:24 So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith.

            2. Cling to your __________________

Romans 4:16–17 16 Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all 17 He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed.

Galatians 3:29 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise

Ephesians 1:4–5 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.

  • “Chosen” -

  • “Holy” -

  • “Blameless” -

  • “Loved” -

  • “Adoption” -

Romans 8:15 (NASB) For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”

            3. Remember that God is ________________

Rom 4:17 (LB) Abraham believed in God who gives life to the dead and who creates something out of nothing. (ESV “calls into existence the things that do not exist”)

Hebrews 11:17-18 By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had received the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, even though God had said to him, “it is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”

2 Cor 1:8-9 We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, Who raises the dead.

Luke 18:27 What is impossible with men is possible with God.”

            4. Base your _______________ on God’s Words

Romans 4:18 (MSG) When everything was hopeless, Abraham believed anyway, deciding to live not on the basis of what he saw he couldn’t do but on what God said he would do.

            5. Live Above the ______________________

Romans 4:19 19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead--since he was about a hundred years old--and that Sarah's womb was also dead.

            6. Strengthen your __________ & give Glory to God

Romans 4:20-21 20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised

          7. Remember that God Never ____________ on you

Romans 4:25 25 He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.

Romans 5:8 8 God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

WHEN LIFE GETS DIFFICULT:

                                   1. RELY ON WHAT GOD _______  ___________!

                                  2. REMEMBER WHAT GOD ______  __________!

                                  3. REFOCUS ON WHAT GOD ________  ______!
