Holding on to hope
(Mark 5:22-34)
He is Risen!
Mark 16:1–2 1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb.
Mark 16:6–7 6 “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’ ”
A Hopeless Woman:
Mark 5:22-26 22 Then one of the synagogue rulers, named Jairus, came there. Seeing Jesus, he fell at his feet 23 and pleaded earnestly with him, "My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live." 24 So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him (Lk.8:42 “the crowds almost crushed him”). 25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.
Leviticus 15:25-31 …she will be unclean as long as she has the bleeding…
26 Any bed she lies on…will be unclean… and anything she sits on will be unclean… 27 Whoever touches her will be unclean… 31 You must keep the Israelites separate from things that make them unclean.
Life Principle #1:
Jesus can succeed where other _______________ have failed!
A Hopeful Woman:
Mark 5:27-28 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 because she thought, "If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.”
Matthew 9:20 “the edge of his cloak” (Edge = Fringe, Corner, Tassel)
Malachi 4:2 (NKJV) “The sun of righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings.” (Edge, Fringe, Tassel)
Matthew 14:35-36 People brought all their sick to (Jesus) and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge (fringe-corner-tassel) of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.
Life Principle #2:
If Jesus _______ who He said He was, then He can ______ what He said He could do!
My Definition of FAITH:
“____________ like God’s telling the truth”
The Hope of resurrection:
Romans 4:17 (LB) Abraham believed in God who gives life to the dead and who creates something out of nothing.
2 Corinthians 1:8–9 8 We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. 9 Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.
Life Principle #3:
If God can give life to a dead body, then He give life to a dead ______________________!
Luke 18:27 What is impossible with men is possible with God.”
Mark 5:29 29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.
A cruel confrontation?
Mark 5:30-33 30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?" 31 "You see the people crowding against you," his disciples answered, "and yet you can ask, 'Who touched me?'" 32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, (Lk.8:47 “seeing that she could not go unnoticed”) came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth.
Life Principle #4:
Better to get hurt by the truth, then comforted with a _________!
A public commendation!
Mark 5:34 34 He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering."
Life Principle #5:
Before you can _________ HOLD, you may need to _______ GO!
Galatians 5:1 1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
Luke 11:9–13 9 Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then… know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!
