1 Samuel 17:8–11 Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man and have him come down to me. If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects; but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us.” 10 Then the Philistine said, “This day I defy the armies of Israel! Give me a man and let us fight each other.” 11 On hearing the Philistine’s words, Saul and all the Israelites were dismayed and terrified.

GOLIATH = Height ____, Bronze Helmet, Bronze Scale Armor _____lbs, Bronze Leg Protectors, A Bronze Javelin with a _____lbs. Iron Spearhead & Large Shield carried by a Soldier!

Joshua 11:21–22 21 At that time Joshua went and destroyed the Anakites… from all the hill country of Israel... 22 No Anakites were left in Israelite territory; only in Gaza, Gath and Ashdod did any survive.

Numbers 13:28–33 28 But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there… 30 Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.” 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.” 32 …All the people we saw there are of great size. 33 We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”

Genesis 6:1–3 When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”

Genesis 6:4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them.

Numbers 14:8–9 If the Lord is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us. Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with us. Do not be afraid of them.

Deuteronomy 20:1–4 When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater than yours, do not be afraid of them, because the Lord your God, who brought you up out of Egypt, will be with you. When you are about to go into battle, the priest shall come forward and address the army. He shall say: “Hear, Israel: Today you are going into battle against your enemies. Do not be fainthearted or afraid; do not panic or be terrified by them. For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.”

OUR RESPONSE to DISAPPOINTMENT:

Choose ____________ over Fear!

1 Samuel 17:26–30 26 David asked the men standing near him… “Who is this uncircumcised! Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?”

1 Samuel 15:24–25 (ESV) 24 Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned, for I have

transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I

feared the people and obeyed their voice. 25 Now therefore, please

pardon my sin and return with me that I may bow before the Lord.”

1 Sam 17:28 28 When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked, “Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle.”

OUR RESPONSE to DISAPPROVAL:

Ignore the _____________ Busters!

4. D_______________________

1 Samuel 17:31-32 31 What David said was overheard and reported to Saul, and Saul sent for him.  32 David said to Saul, "Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.”

1 Samuel 17:33 33 Saul replied, "You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a boy, and he has been a fighting man from his youth."

1 Samuel 17:34-37 34 But David said to Saul, "Your servant has been keeping his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, 35 I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. 36 Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. 37 The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine."

1 Samuel 30:6 (KJV) And David was greatly distressed… but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God
