Rebounding from failure

(2 Samuel 12-15)

Acts 13:22 After removing Saul, he (God) made David their king. He testified concerning him: “I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.”

A. David CONCEALED his sin…

B. David COVERED UP his sin

C. David is CONFRONTED with his sin.

D. David CONFESSES his sin.

E. David Reaps the ____________________ of his Sin.

Four Predictions of David’s Demise:

2 Samuel 12:7–12 7 This is what the Lord… says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. I gave your master’s house to you, and (I Gave) your master’s wives into your arms. I gave you all Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more

Why did you despise the word of the Lord by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and (you) took his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.

10 Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house...’ 11 “This is what the Lord says: ‘Out of your own household I am going to bring calamity on you. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you, and he will sleep with your wives in broad daylight. 12 You did it in secret, but I will do this thing in broad daylight before all Israel…’ ” 14 But because by doing this you have made the enemies of the Lord show utter contempt, the son born to you will die."

Being Forgiven & Reaping _______________ are Two Different Issues.

Galatians 6:7-8 7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.

THE CROP DAVID REAPED:

1.   Bathsheba’s _____________ dies

2 Samuel 12:15-18 After Nathan had gone home, the Lord struck the child that Uriah's wife had borne to David, and he became ill… the child died.

2.  Brother _____________ sister

2 Samuel 13:11-15 11 (Amnon) grabbed her (Tamar) and said, "Come to bed with me, my sister."   12 "Don't, my brother!" she said to him. "Don't force me. Such a thing should not be done in Israel!  Don't do this wicked thing14 But he refused to listen to her, and since he was stronger than she, he raped her

3.  Brother _____________ brother

2 Samuel 13:21-22 21 When King David heard all this, he was furious. 22 Absalom never said a word to Amnon, either good or bad; he hated Amnon because he had disgraced his sister Tamar.

4.  Absalom _____________ Amnon

2 Samuel 13:28 Absalom ordered his men, "Listen! When Amnon is in high spirits from drinking wine and I say to you, 'Strike Amnon down,' then kill him.”

5.  Absalom _____________ and runs away

2 Samuel 13:37-38 37 King David mourned for his son every day. 38 After Absalom fled and went to Geshur, he stayed there three years

6.  Absalom _____________ a conspiracy

2 Samuel 15:12-14 12 And so the conspiracy gained strength, and Absalom's following kept on increasing14 Then David said to all his officials who were with him in Jerusalem, "Come! We must flee, or none of us will escape from Absalom. We must leave immediately, or he will move quickly to overtake us and bring ruin upon us and put the city to the sword."

7.  Absalom _________ with his father’s concubines

2 Samuel 16:22 22 So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and he lay with his father's concubines in the sight of all Israel

8.  Joab _____________ Absalom

2 Samuel 18:14 14 So (Joab) he took three javelins in his hand and plunged them into Absalom's heart...

2 Samuel 18:33 33 The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept. As he went, he said: “O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you—O Absalom, my son, my son!”

Two Principles to consider while sowing to self:

1.   We _______ what we _____, forgiveness notwithstanding.

Hosea 8:7 7 For they sow the wind, and they reap the whirlwind.

Colossians 3:25 25 For he who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong he has done, and that without partiality.

2.   The _________ of the reaping eclipses the pleasure of the

_____________.

Proverbs 6:27–29 27 Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned? 28 Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched? 29 So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished.

HOW TO REBOUND FROM FAILURE:

1. _______________ YOURSELF!

2 Samuel 12:13 13 Then David said to Nathan, ‘I have sinned against the Lord.’   And Nathan said to David, ‘The Lord also has taken away your sin; you shall not die’.

Lev. 20:10 If a man commits adultery with another man's wife--with the wife of his neighbor--both the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death.

            - “HUMBLE” (“praus” in Greek) = “_____________”

2. _______________!

2 Samuel 12:15-22 15 The Lord struck the child that Uriah's wife had borne to David, and he became ill. 16 David pleaded with God for the child. He fasted and went into his house and spent the nights lying on the ground… 22 He answered, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept. I thought, ‘Who knows? The Lord may be gracious to me and let the child live.’

When the _____________ isn’t good, try the ______________!

Theology 101:

Beginning Point: Justification = _______________”

End Point: Glorification = “________________”

Middle ground: Sanctification = ________________”

3. ACCEPT THE _________________________

REALISTICALLY!

2 Samuel 12:19-20 19 David noticed that his servants were whispering among themselves and he realized the child was dead20 Then David got up from the ground. After he had washed, put on lotions and changed his clothes, he went into the house of the Lord and worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and at his request they served him food, and he ate

When you BLAME, you become ______________.

When you ACCEPT, you become _____________!

Romans 1:1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God.

4. REFUSE TO _________  ______!

2 Samuel 12:24 Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba… and she gave birth to a son, and he named him Solomon

2 Samuel 3:2–5 Sons were born to David in Hebron: His firstborn was Amnon the son of Ahinoam of Jezreel; his second… of Abigail… the third… of Maakah the fourth… of Haggith; the fifth… of Abital; and the sixth… of David’s wife Eglah. 2 Sam. 6:23 23 And Michal daughter of Saul…

Our God is the God of the ______________ Chance!
